Designing RTOS Applications on Microcontrollers Workshop
Real-time Operating Systems (RTOS) have been finding their way into nearly every embedded system both connected and disconnected. They provide a convenient paradigm for designing flexible and scalable systems, interacting with hardware, scheduling tasks and many other capabilities. The problem though is that RTOS best practices are not well documented and even seasoned developers can run into costly and time-consuming issues that could have been avoided.
In this workshop, we will explore RTOS best practices, techniques, and design patterns. Topics covered in this workshop include but are not limited to:
  • Decomposing an application into tasks
  • How to set task priorities
  • Performing a rate monotonic analysis
  • Analyzing application data flow
  • Creating a task/thread model
  • How to avoid common RTOS design pitfalls

Everything you Always Wanted to Know about Hardware Attacks (but were afraid to ask)
Hardware security is becoming increasingly important as our lives rely more on embedded devices. Hardware attacks are cheap, and increasingly prevalent. We’ll discuss the hardware attack on the Apple AirTag, where full access to the device was gained. We’ll also cover various classes of attacks, and what techniques are available to make attacks less likely to succeed. This presentation will show embedded system developers where the risks are, and how to start addressing them.

Device Lifecycle Management at the Edge
As the role of firmware and software is increasing in Edge Devices, to the point that they define the product, device updateability in the field, control of the offered services as well as collected/stored data from multiple sensors, becomes critical. Taking things a bit further, performing the updates and enforcing control securely, having the ability to verify if devices are genuine (or not), and the security stance of the device, are the foundation on which the more visible update and control capabilities are built. This session will try to define a lifecycle concept for Edge Devices, detail why the device lifecycle is increasingly relevant today and how can one apply it to facilitate device manufacturing, deployment and management. Examining this topic from multiple perspectives (device user, OEM/device provider, silicon provider) allows us to propose a secure and efficient approach for implementing the device lifecycle, from the silicon up. Industry examples will be discussed, including how to upgrade machine learning at the edge from the cloud.

Case Study: Making Sense of Sensor Output using Real-Time Inference without the "Edge
AI and its variants have revolutionized our ability to use historical big-data to make better decisions by, in essence, predicting the future (inference). Operating officers, sales managers, scientists, motorists, and a host of other stakeholders have reaped the benefits. Realizing these benefits has traditionally required access to full-scale computing resources and very specialized skills. This session will explore emerging tools and techniques to bring real-time inference to small, stand-alone, battery powered devices, bringing these benefits to a whole new class of problems. This session will present a case study of utilizing these tools and techniques to save lives and prevent injuries among the most vulnerable users of our transportation infrastructure, namely, cyclists, scooterists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

Keynote: The Future of Human-Robot Interaction
The robots are coming and they’re getting smarter, evolving from single-task devices (think Roomba) into machines that can make their own decisions and autonomously navigate public spaces. From transportation systems, hospitals and the military, to the robotization of our workplaces and households, robots will be everywhere and will increasingly interact with people.

Whether you find it exhilarating or terrifying (or both), progress in robotics and related fields like AI raises new ethical quandaries and challenges legal codes created for a world in which a sharp line separates man from machine.

Drawing from her recent work exploring humans’ emotional responses to robots, Dr. Kate Darling answers questions like:
  • What happens when robots move from behind factory walls into shared spaces and begin interacting with humans?
  • What opportunities and challenges should we anticipate in the future of human-robot interaction?
  • Where does the true potential of AI and robotics lie, and will robots supplement human ability, or replace it?
  • Why do people treat robots like living things, and why does that matter?
  • What can and can’t robots and AI do?
  • What societal challenges will we face in a future with robots (ethical, legal, social)?

Dr. Darling examines why people fear some robots and empathize with others, while also prompting – and answering – questions about what society’s relationship with these robots could look like in the future. What follows is in part an examination of the technology itself, but ultimately, offers a window into how it’s poised to change the way we relate to each other and our own humanity – and why it matters.

New Interfaces for Low Density FPGAs Enable New Edge and IoT Use Cases
Small form factor, low power FPGAs are now adopting new interfaces including Bluetooth Low Energy, USB and MIPI C-PHY allowing for a variety of unique localized processing and data transfer use cases. Benefits and tradeoffs of using an FPGA over alternative silicon devices will be shared as well as discovery of use cases that are only now possible as a result of these new interfaces being available. SoC's with FPGA fabric, MCU and BLE now provide highly flexible sensor hub and ML processing capabilities for remote edge processing and result transmission USB interfacing on FPGAs now provide flexible interfacing for devices, hosts and hubs that could previously only be developed with ASICs. MIPI C-PHY interfaces on new FPGAs provide higher resolution, frame rate and lower power display options for displaying remote data on automotive and IoT devices.
